Hyatt Luncheon, Jan 13th – Judges Seitz & Williams, and FPD Michael Caruso
On January 13, 2016, we had a provoking presentation and discussion regarding the CARE Reentry Court and the Clemency Project 2014, by the Honorable Patricia A. Seitz, Senior United States District Judge, the Honorable Kathleen M. Williams, United States District Judge, and Michael Caruso, Federal Public Defender for the Southern District of Florida. Members of the CARE committee were present including members of the Probation office, Randy Hummel from the United States Attorney’s Office and a professor/administrator/program coordinator from FIU. The CARE program has been operating in several other Districts and ours is patterned after the one operating in the Northern District of Florida. Judge Seitz asked for mentors to assist the released prisoners adjust to life outside of the BOP. Michael Caruso spoke about the Clemency Project 2014 and also sought volunteers. They have an end of February deadline to get applications in place. He pointed out how easy it is to assist with the program and that he has people who can help civil practitioners participate. Judge Williams echoed the importance of both initiatives, her dedication to them, and encouraged those in attendance to get involved and to reach out to others as well.
