The Bill of Rights’ Birthday!
On Friday, December 14, 2018, the South Florida Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, in conjunction with the National Education Project, commemorated the 227th birthday of the Bill of Rights at North Beach Elementary School. Every fourth grader in the school was given their own personal Bill of Rights which they affixed their pictures to beforehand. Throughout the week, teachers in each 4th grade classroom discussed the Bill of Rights and taught the students the history behind it and its importance. On its birthday, police officers from the City of Miami Beach came to school to personally deliver cakes to each 4th grade classroom and attest to the students signing their own personal Bill of Rights. Each class then discussed the provisions of the Bill of Rights and then, with the assistance of the police officers, sang happy birthday to the Bill of Rights. Then it was time for cake!
A special thank you to our Miami Beach Police Department and its officers for being such gracious and willing participants; the administrators at North Beach Elementary who helped facilitate the logistics; our parent assistants who were instrumental in making this a success; and the National Education Project for its leadership and guidance.
Until next year….
