CLE Sexual Harassment Symposium

On Thursday, May 17, 2018, the Women’s Initiative Committee of the FBA, South Florida Chapter, hosted a luncheon at Holland & Knight for a symposium on sexual harassment focused on education and reform in the workplace.  This CLE pre-approved seminar allowed attendees to hear a frank and educational discussion with representatives from a cross section of the legal community who handle sexual harassment issues.   Our distinguished panel included the Honorable United States Magistrate Lauren Fleischer LouisJ.J. Piskadlo Jr., Legislative Assistant to Senator Lauren F. Book,  Kimberly Cruz from EEOC Miami, Grissel Seijo from Restaurant Brands International, and John Byrne, Esq., partner at Leon Cosgrove, LLP.  The symposium was moderated by Assistant Federal Public Defender Celeste Higgins, former FBA South Florida Chapter President and current Board Member.

Multiple issues were discussed, ranging from tactics aimed at increasing prevention to advancements in training and victims’ ability to report misconduct.  Legal frameworks and approaches were analyzed from both the plaintiff and defense perspectives.   Attendees also received the latest updates on the status of EEOC published guidance as well as where things stand with the Florida Legislature advancing more comprehensive laws against sexual harassment and bolstering victims’ rights.  Tough and sensitive issues were discussed in an interactive format with not only our engaging panelists and our moderator, but the audience as well.   It was a very fruitful conversation.

A special thank you to our panelists, to Holland & Knight for providing their conference room, and to our almost 40 attendees!
