FBA Boardroom Lunch with the U.S. Attorney for the SDFL
On June 5, the South Florida Chapter kicked off its 2019 Summer Boardroom Luncheon series with the Honorable Ariana Fajardo Orshan, the United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, as its featured speaker. U.S. Attorney Fajardo Orshan discussed the career path (attending Florida International University and Nova Southeastern Law, working at the Miami-Dade State Attorney’s Office and in private practice, and then serving on the local state-court bench) which led to her becoming the first presidentially appointed female U.S. Attorney in this District’s history. U.S. Attorney Fajardo Orshan shared that just seven of the 93 Districts nationwide are led by women.
U.S. Attorney Fajardo Orshan also talked about some of the most pressing local issues, including high-end money laundering (and her creation of a new section in the U.S. Attorney’s Office to confront it), cybercrimes, threats to national security, healthcare fraud, international narcotics trafficking, and human trafficking (including law enforcement’s united efforts to combat crimes surrounding the Superbowl). She also mentioned the biggest surprises of the confirmation process — the unpredictability of the full Senate vote and learning of her confirmation via Twitter — and her new position, as well as her efforts to obtain more resources from the Department of Justice for the District.
The FBA thanks U.S. Attorney Fajardo Orshan for an interesting and informative discussion with our members and for hosting the event.
The Summer Boardroom Luncheons continue during the next three months. Stay tuned for details!
