Law Day 2017

On May 4, 2017, the South Florida Chapter of the Federal Bar Association kicked off its annual Law Day activities at the beautiful HistoryMiami Museum presented by the Museum’s Eleventh Judicial Circuit Historical Society.  The theme of the program this year was the Fourteenth Amendment: Transforming American Democracy.  That evening, a panel consisting of Judge Milton Hirsch, Attorney Cheryl Little, and Judge Thomas Logue, and moderated by Attorney Jermaine A. Lee engaged in a historical conversation about citizenship rights and equal protection for former slaves juxtaposed with current hot-button issues.

On May 5, 2017, the Law Day festivities continued at the HistoryMiami Museum, and the students from the Academy of Law Studies, Law Enforcement Officers’ Memorial High School witnessed a naturalization ceremony presided over by United States District Judge Jose Martinez with featured remarks by United States Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.  Other Southern District of Florida judges in attendance included Judge Beth Bloom, Chief Bankruptcy Judge Laurel Isicoff, Judge Patricia Seitz, and Judge Paul Huck.  Following the ceremony, the students viewed the “We the People” Exhibit at the Museum.  But the fun did not end there!

The students then observed court proceedings before Judge Bloom at the Wilkie F. Ferguson, Jr. United States Courthouse.  After the court proceedings, the students ate lunch with a few local lawyers and some of the Southern District of Florida judges.  Lunch was followed by an inspiring panel discussion by lawyers and judges about the “Challenges and Paths to Success.”  The panel was moderated by our Chapter President Benjamin Brodsky and featured Enjolique Aytch, United States Magistrate Judge Edwin Torres, Jonathan Osborne, Nykeah Cohen, and Daniel Cervantes.

Special thanks to Judge Bloom and Chief Bankruptcy Judge Laurel Isicoff and their staffs for organizing such an incredible event, and to all members of the judiciary and the bar who attended the Law Day events!
